“Mountains evoke powerful emotions within each one of us.
Both peace and excitement; solitude and belonging; trepidation and joy.”
First of all, may I extend my gratitude to you for visiting and browsing my website, and for taking the time to get to know the person behind the lens a little bit better!
My name is Ross MacGregor Davidson. I am a professional photographer and secondary school teacher, living in the beautiful Lake District in the north west of England. I spend a lot of my time hiking and backpacking in the fells of the Lake District and the mountains of Scotland.
I am a qualified Summer Mountain Leader (Mountain Training Association) and currently progressing towards my Winter Mountain Leader qualification. I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to ‘bagging’ mountains. I have completed multiple rounds of the Wainwright’s in the Lake District, and I am working my way through the Munro’s, Munro Tops, Corbett’s and Graham’s in Scotland. However, my tendency to return to areas repeatedly for photography purposes may well hinder those tick-box objectives!
Aside from the hiking and photography, I enjoy sport - football, badminton, trad climbing and fitness; playing the piano and cooking! I am quite family orientated, and spend lots of time with my lovely Mum and sister (who are both keen hikers too!), when I’m not roaming around somewhere in the camper van that is!
So, “where did it all begin?” Well, the hillwalking came first. It is a hobby that I have enjoyed with my family since I was very young. I have fond memories of clambering my way up boulders twice my size on Scafell Pike; and of gazing up in childish amazement at the giant rocky pyramid that we would drive past on the A82 - on our way north to stay at my grandparents in Gairloch.
Upon reflection, it’s easy to see where my awe of the majesty and grandeur of the mountain landscape came from. It wasn’t until my adulthood that I discovered a method for channeling that feeling of wonderment; the possibility to freeze those fragments of time into a real and very tangible memory - that’s when the art of photography became very exciting to me.
I began learning photography in 2020, which aligned with moving to live in the Lake District. Since then, I have developed my creative technique and ability to express myself through image-making.
Every image holds a hidden personal story. Those of you who have had the privilege to explore the mountains will understand, no hike is the same as the last. Mountains evoke powerful emotions within us. Both peace and excitement; solitude and belonging; trepidation and joy.
My objective is to capture all of those feelings of wonderment in a single frame, whilst telling a story of the journey behind each image and accurately representing the reality of existence in these wild places.
