1-2-1 Photography Tuition
What to expect
A fully-bespoke and private photography tuition experience. Designed with you in mind.
Whether you are a beginner or advanced photographer; comfortable on the high mountains or prefer a gentler low-level outing; want to learn to shoot in manual or how to master composition (and everything in between!), I will create a session that suits you. This is an engaging, practical and hands-on session with a relaxed atmosphere.
What makes my 1-2-1 sessions valuable is the focus on creating unique imagery - not just generic landscape shots, but photographs built on strong composition, intentional storytelling and a clear sense of place.
As a qualified teacher of seven years, I have the knowledge, experience and skillset to ensure you gain the very most out of your tuition sessions with me.

Learning Outcomes
Technical aspects - using manual settings to master the exposure triangle; where and how to focus for sharp images; exposure and focus bracketing; use of filters for creative results and more!
Composition - developing your ability to identify and arrange elements within the frame to create well balanced and compelling images.
Expressive photography - teach you how to create evocative images through your own creativity and from your experience in the landscape on the day.
Location advice - understanding how light interacts with the landscape in different locations and how to identify areas that will may make impactful images.
Everything else! - we will have lots of time to discuss anything and everything else in between. The aforementioned is a framework for me to provide you with the best learning experience for your time with me.
Itinerary
All 1-2-1 workshops are completely bespoke to you. Well in advance of your session, we shall discuss your photography aspirations; desired locations; your fitness and any accessibility considerations.
From there, I shall design a completely bespoke itinerary that will help you to feel comfortable and ensure that your learning and enjoyment of the day is optimal.
Your itinerary is shaped by:
Your photography aspirations and desired learning
Your fitness and accessibility requirements
The duration of your workshop
Locations may include:
Highland photography - mountain summits, ridges and high viewpoints
Lowland photography - valleys, woodlands and lakesides
Blend - a considered mixture of both
Workshop durations:
Half Day: typically a single sunset with carefully selected locations en route
Full Day: both sunrise and sunset
Multi-Day: maximum flexibility, variety of locations, adapting to changing conditions and light.
Why choose me?
Qualified Teacher Status:
With a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), I have seven years of professional teaching experience. I have excellent knowledge of teaching and learning methods and strategies; a confident ability to articulate and deliver course content; and a good understanding of how to create a comfortable and relaxed environment to ensure that you feel able to maximise your learning during your session.
Qualified Mountain Leader:
If you wish to visit mountainous locations during your workshop, you can do so with confidence in me to lead you safely in that environment. I have vast experience of mountaineering and backpacking in the Lake District and Scotland, (in all weather conditions - believe me!). I qualified as a Summer Mountain Leader in October 2024, and I am now working towards my Winter Mountain Leader qualification.
Location Knowledge:
I have extensive knowledge of the Lake District and specific regions of the Scottish Highlands - specifically the Mamores, Torridon and Assynt - having focused on these areas for the past six years. My favoured style of photography is to identify unique perspectives and capture them in the most dramatic weather conditions, with the aim to create expressive and compelling imagery. I can help you to achieve this too.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
I shall be constantly monitoring the weather forecasts in the lead up to the workshop and during the workshop itself.
The workshop shall be postponed if there is seriously inclement weather forecast that would pose a risk to the health and safety of all in the group.
I will communicate this with you as soon as possible. However, accurate mountain weather forecasts are only available a few days - one week in advance. Unfortunately, I cannot be responsible for any travel or accommodation fees that you may lose in this event, so I recommend seeking appropriate insurance.
-
No problem. I am here to help photographers that are beginners or advanced-level. I will tailor the learning experience for your specific requirements and aspirations.
-
I live in the Lake District so I am very flexible to offer workshops in this area.
I teach in a secondary school four days per week, with every Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. I am available for bookings on these days during term time and can travel as far as southern Scotland (Glen Coe/Fort William).
During the holiday periods, I will invariably be in Scotland. This would be the best time to arrange a workshop in the Highlands for me because I will already be there.
-
Refunds are only granted in the event that I am unable to lead the workshop due to personal circumstances. I will communicate this with you as soon as possible, in this eventuality.
A non-refundable deposit is required upon booking. If a participant decides to cancel their booking prior to two months before commencement of the workshop, then the remaining fee shall be refunded.
-
Absolutely! You will need to book a multi-day session. I am also able to rent high-end camping equipment to you if necessary.
Multi-day workshops with wild camps provide an excellent opportunity to be in the optimal locations for sunsets and sunrises.
