1-2-1 Landscape Photography Tuition
What to expect
A fully-bespoke and private photography tuition experience. Designed with you in mind.
Whether you are a beginner or advanced photographer; comfortable on the high mountains or prefer a gentler low-level outing; want to learn to shoot in manual or how to master composition (and everything in between!), I will create a session that suits you. This is an engaging, practical and hands-on session with a relaxed atmosphere.
What makes my 1-2-1 sessions valuable is the focus on creating unique imagery - not just generic landscape shots, but photographs built on strong composition, intentional storytelling and clear personal expression.
As a qualified teacher of seven years, I have the knowledge, experience and skillset to ensure you gain the very most out of your tuition sessions with me.

Why choose me?
Qualified Teacher Status:
With a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), I have seven years of professional teaching experience. I have excellent knowledge of teaching and learning methods and strategies; a confident ability to articulate and deliver course content; and a good understanding of how to create a comfortable and relaxed environment to ensure that you feel able to maximise your learning during your session.

If you wish to visit mountainous locations during your workshop, you can do so with confidence in me to lead you safely in that environment. I have vast experience of mountaineering and backpacking in the Lake District and Scotland, (in all weather conditions - believe me!). I am qualified to lead you in summer conditions in the UK mountains (e.g. no snow of consequence on the route).
Location Knowledge:
I have extensive knowledge of the Lake District and specific regions of the Scottish Highlands - specifically the Lochaber, Torridon and Assynt - having focused on these areas for the past six years. My favoured style of photography is to identify unique perspectives and capture them in the most dramatic weather conditions, with the aim to create expressive and compelling imagery. I can help you to achieve this too.

Andrew R | 1-2-1 Tuition | Apr 2025
“From the off, Ross made me feel relaxed and at ease. Once we got to the location Ross put me at was as I chose my first compositions. With minimal fuss he talked about how I might improve them and it was small, simple points that made a world of difference. On to our main location to set up for sunset, again I chose my compositions and we discussed them. During the golden hour, Ross was always on hand with tips to maximise the moment and it paid dividends with stunning images. The day was everything I had hoped for, expert tuition, amazing scenery and fantastic company. I hope to book again next year! Thank you Ross for your knowledge, company and patience on the hills.”
David M | Exped Workshop | Sept 2025
“I joined Ross on a workshop in the Lake District in September 2025 and would thoroughly recommend it. Ross is extremely knowledgeable of both the local area and his craft - as well as being able to apply this to the workshop. I really appreciated his hands-on approach but also knowing when to step back and challenge me to put what I had learned into practice. I’ve come away from the workshop with a better understanding of how to compose compelling images in addition to a new awareness and set of skills I’ll be able to use in the future. Credit also to Ross and his mountain leader knowledge as we had to rearrange plans on safety grounds due to the weather. This was done with no trouble and the whole experience was expertly managed by Ross.”
Richard N | 1-2-1 Tuition | May 2025
“I recently had the pleasure of attending a 1-2-1 mountain photography workshop with Ross Davidson in the Lake District, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Ross combines his photographic talent with the clarity and patience of a skilled teacher.
What really stood out was is ability to tailor the day to my experience level and goals. Rather than simply telling me what to do, Ross encouraged me to think critically about composition, lighting and technique - making the learning both meaningful and memorable.
Ross’ rare combination of award-winning photography and professional teaching makes his workshops truly exceptional. I left the day feeling inspired, more confident and equipped with new skills I’ll carry forward.”
Frequently Asked Questions
-
I shall be constantly monitoring the weather forecasts in the lead up to the workshop and during the workshop itself.
The workshop shall be postponed if there is seriously inclement weather forecast that would pose a risk to the health and safety of all in the group. In this case, I will communicate this with you as soon as possible.
However, reliably accurate mountain weather forecasts are only available a few days in advance. Unfortunately, I cannot be responsible for any travel or accommodation fees that you may lose in this event, so I recommend seeking appropriate insurance if applicable.
-
No problem. I am here to help photographers that are beginners or advanced-level. I will tailor the learning experience for your specific requirements and aspirations.
If you are just learning to use a digital camera, I can help you with that.
If you are an experienced photographer seeking to improve their approach to composition, I can help you with that too.
-
I live in the Lake District so I am very flexible to offer workshops in this area.
I teach in a secondary school four days per week, with every Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. I am available for bookings on these days during term time and can travel as far as southern Scotland (Glen Coe/Fort William).
During the school holiday periods, I will invariably be in Scotland. This would be the best time to arrange a workshop in the Highlands for me because I will already be there.
-
Refunds are only granted in the event that I am unable to lead the workshop due to personal circumstances. I will communicate this with you as soon as possible, in this eventuality.
A non-refundable deposit is required upon booking. If a participant decides to cancel their booking prior to two months before commencement of the workshop, then the remaining fee shall be refunded.
-
Absolutely! You will need to book a multi-day session (e.g. Two Days or Three Days).
If you are seeking a longer duration expedition in a specific area (e.g. 6 nights in Torridon/Fisherfield/Assynt etc) then please contact me for a bespoke quote.
I am also able to lend you high-end camping equipment for a rental fee to cover the cost of any potential damages.
Multi-day workshops with wild camps provide an excellent opportunity to be in the optimal locations for sunsets and sunrises.
