About Me

First of all, may I extend my gratitude to you for visiting and browsing my website, and for taking the time to get to know the person behind the lense a little bit better!

My name is Ross Davidson. I am a photographer, hiker and secondary school teacher, living in the beautiful Lake District in the north west of England. I spend a lot of my time hiking and backpacking in the Cumbrian Fells and Scottish Highlands.

I am a Mountain Leader ‘In-Training’, and a bit of a fanatic when it comes to ‘bagging’ mountains. I have completed multiple rounds of the Wainwright’s, and I am working my way through the Munro’s, Munro Tops and Corbett’s.

Having these objectives motivates me to be out with the camera and favours my preferred spontaneous and reactive style of image making, and ensures that I am able to encounter unusual compositions that have rarely (if ever!) been photographed before.

Aside from the hiking and photography, I enjoy sport - football, badminton, trad climbing and fitness; playing the piano and cooking! I am quite family orientated, and spend lots of time with my Mum and sister (who are both keen hikers too!), when I’m not roaming around somewhere in the camper van that is!

Photography

So, “where did it all begin?” Well, the hiking came first. It is a hobby that I have enjoyed with my family since I was very young. I have fond memories of clambering my way up boulders twice my size on Scafell Pike; and of gazing up in childish amazement at the giant rocky pyramid that we would drive past on the A82 - on our way north to stay at my grandparents in Gairloch.

Upon reflection, it’s easy to see where my awe of the majesty and grandeur of the mountain landscape came from. It wasn’t until my adulthood that I discovered a method for channeling that feeling of wonderment; the possibility to freeze those fragments of time into a real and very tangible memory - that’s when the art of photography became very exciting to me.

I began taking photography seriously in 2020, which aligned with moving to live in the Lake District. Since then, I have developed my creative technique and ability to express myself through image-making, though it is a continuous learning process!

Every image holds a hidden personal story. Those of you who have had the privilege to explore the mountains will understand, no hike is the same as the last. Mountains are capable of evoking powerful emotions within us. Both peace and excitement; solitude and belonging; trepidation and joy - all in one magical moment. My objective is to capture all of this within a single frame. That is what has, and continues to, motivate me to keep pulling on those hiking boots!
